What to Expect

Tuscia is the area of the Province of Viterbo, in northern Lazio. The main city, Viterbo, is an artistic jewel and the thick oak woods on the Cimini Mountains are a wonder of nature.

Tuscia is also much more. There are at least five things you shouldn’t miss during a journey to discover this area with nature, history, wine and food. Three large volcanic lakes are in Tuscia from north to south: Lake Bolsena, Lake di Vico and Lake Bracciano.

Bolsena is the biggest lack and has two green islands, Bisentina and Martana. The towns on its shores, such as Capodimonte, Bolsena and Montefiascone are well worth a visit.

Lake di Vico, at Caprarola, is the least spoilt by development, with just a few restaurants, homes and bathing resorts on its shores; the rest is nature and lots of green.

Finally, Lake Bracciano is the place where the Romans go, with the most tourist development, has wonderful places like the Orsini-Odescalchi Castle. One of the towns near Lake di Vico, Caprarola, has the amazing Palazzo Farnese, the majestic 16th century palace built for the nephew of Pope Paui III Farnese.

The 5-sided structure with an internal courtyard was built by great artists of the time such as Sangallo and Vignola. It has the Scala Regia, interior rooms like the Mappamondo Room, and the beautiful Italian Gardens culminating in the Pleasure Pavilion.

Civita di Bagnoregio, known as the “dying town”, is a little, fragile jewel in Tuscia. Built on a volcanic tuff outcrop in the Valle dei Calanchi, it is linked to Bagnoregio by a narrow pedestrian bridge.
There is a special, timeless atmosphere in the village, with it stone houses, small shops, typical restaurants and breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside!

    Itinerary

    Day 1 ROME - TARQUINIA

Departure from Rome from the agreed locaction.
Arrival in Tarquinia, the emblem of Etruscan civilization, and one of the best-known and traditional places in Tuscia. Lunch in a reserved restaurant and in early afternoon, entry and tour of the Etruscan Necropolis, with its world-famous frescoed tombs, and the National Etruscan Museum, with its valuable archaeological remains, located in the wonderful 16th century Palazzo Vitelli. At the end of the tour, continuation and check-in at the booked hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

    Day 2TARQUINIA - VITERBO - CAPRAROLA - BAGNAIA -VITERBO

Tarquinia – Breakfast at the hotel, check out and transfer to Viterbo, known as “the City of the Popes”, for a guided tour of the city. In September, Piazza del Plebiscito is the setting for the process with the Santa Rosa Statue, a unique and spectacular event held every year. During the walking tour we will also see Palazzo Farnese and the extraordinary Papal Palace, the setting for the first and longest papal conclave in history. Lunch in a booked restaurant and in the afternoon, entry and guided tour of Villa Lante in Bagnaia and Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola. Villa Lante is a splendid example of a 16th century residence surrounded by wonderful Italian-style gardens and a park that was once a hunting reserve for ecclesiastics. The impressive Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola is the largest late Renaissance building ever built in Italy. This was one of the aristocratic residences built by the Farnese family in their domains. It started out as a fortress but then, while retaining the 5-sided layout, was converted into an impressive Renaissance palace, which then became the summer residence for the cardinal and his court. Return to Viterbo in the evening check-in at the booked hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3VITERBO - CIVITA DI BAGNOREGIO - LAKE BOLSENA - VITERBO

Viterbo. Breakfast at the hotel and departure to visit Civita di Bagnoregio, the “dying town”, in the middle of the Valle dei Calanchi and connected by a narrow, scenic footbridge providing wonderful views.
Civita, isolated on the top of the volcanic tuff outcrop, has been slowly disappearing over the centuries due to landslides and earthquakes that have seriously threatened its stability. We will visit the Cathedral, the house where St. Bonaventure was born, and the rest of the quiet settlement.
We will then go on to Lake Bolsena for lunch in a reserved restaurant with fish dishes and in the early afternoon a short boat trip; afterwards, a guided tour of Bolsena to visit the church of Santa Cristina, which contains a stone bearing the saint’s footprint. In the evening, we go back to the hotel Viterbo for dinner and overnight stay

    Day 4VITERBO - ORVIETO - ROME

Viterbo. Breakfast at the hotel and departure for Orvieto, one the oldest cities n Italy, founded by the Etruscans. The first settlements date back to the 9th century BC and were located in volcanic tuff grottoes in the hill were the present town is located. The guided tour includes admission to the splendid Duomo, an extraordinary example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture, with a wealth of artworks. The church has numerous works including the celebrated frescoes by Luca Signorelli and the Corporale Reliquary. Lunch in a booked restaurant and then departure for the return trip.
